My PCOS Story

My name is Pamela, and I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) over 10 years ago.

I had my first child at 20 years old, she was unplanned, but a pleasant surprise. The only issues I had were excess facial hair, irregular periods, and depression/anxiety. I would have at least 3 or more periods a year. After having my daughter, the doctors put me on Birth Control Pills….that’s where the problems began.

I took the BCP’s for over a year then stopped because of all of the horrible side affects. From there my periods basically become non-existent, and all of the other symptoms started to show. I diagnosed from a Reproductive Endocrinologist over 4 years later….well, in all honesty, I went to the doctor, told her what I had and told her to test me for it!

From there we started infertility treatments to have our next child. After 3 1/2 years of Metformin, Progesterone, Clomid, Gonal-F injections, ultrasounds, bloodwork and ultrasounds every 3 days, HCG triggers, etc. We finally conceived our second child in 2004. After I stopped breastfeeding, I started something called Fertility Blend for Women (its main ingredient is Vitex) and within 6 months my period went from ZERO, to a 31 day cycle.

We tried for our third child but used a drug called Femara, as I did not react well to Clomid and did not enjoy its “Hulk like” side affects. We conceived our third daughter after 4 months of Metformin, Femara, HCG trigger, plus PreSeed (we conceived without an IUI or any other fertility procedures).

Our fourth daughter was our miracle baby – we followed the same regime above (minus the Metformin) however bloodwork said we did not ovulate, and were not pregnant. We conceived her a few weeks later, much to our surprise! No medication involved, only PreSeed!

I was on various herbal remedies to control the nasties of PCOS and regulate my cycle. I have had an incredibly positive response from these herbs, much more so than from prescription medication, and plan to remain on them as my method of treatment.

We found out we were pregnant with our 5th child in July 2009. We weren’t trying, I was taking Fertility Blend, drinking apple cider vinegar and tracking my basal body temps to watch my cycle.  We delivered our first son in May 2010, here at home.

We just found out in January that we’re expecting baby #6! A complete surprise. Again, we were not trying. I was taking Fertility Blend, Maca and a number of other health supporting supplements while tracking my basal body temps. Our second son is due this October and yes, we’re planning another home birth :)

Despite the fact we’ve been blessed with 5 (soon to be 6!) children, does not negate the hell we’ve been through. I still get ignorant comments like “you must not have any infertility problems, you’ve got 5 kids!”. They don’t know what we’ve been through, and how much effort and time I’ve put into treating this condition. We have our children because of 2 reasons…..#1, God and #2, Holistic medicine.

I started this site in hopes of helping others suffering from PCOS. The more women I speak to, the more I hear about them not knowing enough about the condition, that their doctors don’t inform them, they just pop them pills, and send them on their way.

I have returned to school and recently obtained my Nutritional Consultant and Master Herbalist certifications. I will graduate next year with a my degree in Holistic Medicine. My PCOS journey was what lead me to natural treatments, and I soon realized the more I learned the better my health, the health of my family and the health of my fellow cysters would be.
