Does PCOS increase your risk for Fibrocystic Breast Disease?
Welcome back!
The answer is YES, it does.
You’re probably asking, “What is Fibrocystic Breast Disease?”. Fibrocystic breasts are extremely lumpy and often very tender to the touch. These roundish lumps can be soft or firm, move freely within the breast tissue and are often quite tender. The intensity of these symptoms often vary with the menstrual cycle. FBD is benign, meaning it is not cancerous, and it affects more than 60% of women.
FBD has been linked to excess estrogen and prolactin, which is why women with PCOS are three times more likely to develop it.
Most doctors will prescribe a pain reliever, and/or birth control pills. Since we’ve already discussed the negatives of BCP’s, here is a list of other things you can to do prevent or lower your risk of developing the condition (source: Natural Health Solutions for PCOS)
1) Consume more omega-3 fats, which are found mainly in fish or fish oil. A new medical study from Oregon Health and Science University has shown that women who consume the most omega-3 fats were 67% less likely to have fibrocystic breasts and 49% less likely to have breast cancer.
The authors conclude, “Our results support a protective effect of omega-3 fatty acid intake…against benign fibrocystic breast changes and the progression of proliferative changes to breast cancer.”
2) The herb Vitex may help to relieve Fibrocystic breast disease since it promotes a better balance between estrogen and progesterone.
3) Avoid caffeine and reduce trans and saturated fat intake.
4) Eat a high-fiber diet, with an emphasis on plant-based foods.
5) Stay away from a diet high in refined “convenience” foods, which can worsen the condition.
6) Regular exercise is also helpful.
My first thought upon reading this information was…. breast cancer. It’s important for us to do monthly breast exams, however having FBD may make it a bit more difficult to determine a “lumpy breast” vs. a lump that contains cancer. My advise is DON’T GUESS! If you have any questions about a lump you found contact your doctor immediately. Do not assume that just because you have PCOS and noticed a lump or lumps that its FBD - be safe and proactive, get it checked out to be sure.
