Milk increases insulin resistance?
We have already discussed the term insulin resistance (http://pcosinfo.com/blog/insulin-resistance-how-does-metformin-help-those-with-pcos/) The main way to control IR is by following a low GI eating plan (glycemic index).
Foods that are low GI are usually those that contain good carbs, and proteins, etc. But what about dairy? We are told constantly to make sure we consume enough dairy to insure we get enough calcium for strong bones and teeth….but what does dairy do to those of us with insulin resistance?
Well, of course, it increases it. Diabetes has been found in more people who drink milk, than in those who do not. Interestingly enough, the lower amount of fat in the milk, the more it raises the blood sugar. So those who drink low fat milk for weight benefits are not getting any benefit at all !
Although it is now clear we should avoid milk, and though other dairy products are acceptable (unsweetend yogurt, butter — no hydrogenated margarine, etc) we do need to realize that our bodies still need the Vitamin D and Calcium. To make sure you get the adequate amount of both, add a Vitamin D & Calcium supplement to your daily regime!
