The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Aga Khan University Karachi Pakistan, Karachi, Pakistan performed a study on the safety and efficacy of long-term Metformin use in Pregnancy. This study was to evaluate pregnancy outcomes in women with PCOS who conceived while taking Metformin, and continued the medication during pregnancy.

The study included 137 infertile women with PCOS; of those women 105 conceived while taking Metformin, while the remainder conceived without Metformin. These women were followed during their pregnancy and were divided into three groups:

  • Women who stopped Metformin between 4-16 weeks of pregnancy
  • Women who received Metformin up until 32 weeks of gestation
  • Women who continued Metformin throughout pregnancy

They followed their incidences of pregnancy-induced hypertension/pre-eclampsia, fetal growth, pre-term labor, and live birth rates.

Based on the results of this study, they conclused the following:

In women with PCOS, continuous use of metformin during pregnancy significantly reduced the rate of miscarriage, gestational diabetes requiring insulin treatment and fetal growth restriction. No congenital anomaly, intrauterine death or stillbirth was reported in this study.

I posted this information to further support those who have taken, or have been told to take Metformin during their first trimester. When prescribed by doctors, it is quite beneficial and still shows no ill effects to the unborn child. It only increases your chances of a healthy pregnancy, and baby.
