How does PCOS affect your sleep?

With all that is happening these days it’s natural to have trouble sleeping. Worrying about work, the economy, family or relationships….its a lot to handle. Then, add on the additional stress and strain of PCOS/trying to conceive. Its no wonder we have trouble sleeping.

Insomnia can be caused by many things, one of which is hormones. That is why many women with PCOS have so much trouble getting to sleep and more importantly staying asleep.

Go to the doctor and you’ll receive the brilliant advise of simply “reducing your stress will help reduce the insomnia”. DUH! If it were that easy, wouldn’t we have done it by now? They’ll probably prescribe prescription sleep aids like Ambien, Rozerem or suggest you to use some over-the-counter medications like Unisom, Tylenol or Advil PM, etc.

While those medications have helped many with insomnia, they do not come without their risks or problems. They all come with Side affects and cause additional stress on our livers (which we know we DO not need) Also, some are more sensitive to the medications than others, they often have drug interactions and your body can become immune to them.

There are alternatives including foods, and herbal supplements to help you sleep. I’ve found these to be much more effective, and they have no side affects at all.

The most common herbs to help sleep are:

  • Chamomile
  • Hops
  • Valerian Root
  • Kava Kava

Essential Oils such as Lavender and Jasmine can also be used to safely help you relax and sleep better.
