SOY: Good, or bad?

I will admit, I don’t know much about soy….I never jumped on the bandwagon when it became so incredibly popular a few years ago.

What I do know is that soy does provide many health benefits. I recently read something about it being beneficial for womens fertility, as soy somewhat counteracts the excess estrogen in our system. I read that and thought, wow…I’m all over it! Women with PCOS often have higher levels of estrogen in their system, which contributes to the irregular hormones.

However, upon further research, and speaking with Hethir (from Natural-Fertility-Info.com) I found this information to be false.

The phytoestrogens found in soy have been shown to interfere with:

  • Endocrine function (potential to cause fertility problems)
  • Reproductive issues
  • Hypospadias (birth defect; interrupted development of the penis)
  • Increases breast cancer risk in women
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Reducing the assimilation of important minerals
  • Premature puberty*

So while soy has been advertised and pushed as one of the best health foods of the century, it is not recommended for women who are fighting fertility issues (such as PCOS), young women, or those trying to conceive or who are pregnant.

To avoid irregular hormones, or correct the issue you should be taking herbs directed at those specific issues such as Maca, and Vitex.
